Vrouwen in de vormgeving in Nederland 1880–1940 is the commercial edition of Marjan Groot's doctorate on the achievements and the professional reputation of women designers in Dutch decorative arts and design between 1880 and 1940 (Leiden University, 2004) (see also her article in Journal of Design History, 19/2, 2006). It works from an art historical perspective and explicitly focuses on gender issues to present a history of the work of craftswomen from the end of the nineteenth century, when some of this work first gained proper recognition as applied art, until the outbreak of the Second World War. Groot investigates the way these women came forward with their work and took part in contemporary design debates, as well as offering a general account of the designers’ social background and the extent of their engagement in professional circles. As might be expected, the book intends to question and adjust the existing overviews of the history of applied arts in the Netherlands, which, according to the author, are largely based on an analysis of the oeuvres of male designers and on stylistic innovations. Groot refers here in particular to Louis Gans’ 1966 reference work Nieuwe Kunst. De Nederlandse bijdrage tot de Art Nouveau (New Art. The Dutch Contribution to the Art Nouveau) and even to the 1997 publication Kunstnijverheid in Nederland 1880–1940 (Applied Art in the Netherlands 1880–1940) of which she is one of the editors. This extensive and detailed book of reference thus brings to the fore a series of hitherto poorly studied female artists.
