This book is a history of changing perceptions and attitudes in 19th-century Bengal. Like many other parts of Asia, Bengal was subject to the imperialism of the West. In this book the ideas of Bhudev Mukhopadhyay, Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay and Swami Vivekananda are considered in detail. Their opinions are representative of the intellectual excitement of the period, and their ideas present different perceptions of the Western presence in Bengal.
