This paper examines the distribution of initial IM in New Zealand English. Although a number of linguists have commented on this feature, there has been no previous systematic analysis of its distribution in the speech of New Zealanders. This paper describes the distribution of initial /t/ in a sample of 5,775 tokens produced by 97 New Zealanders from the Wellington Corpus of Spoken New Zealand English. The analysis identifies three main variants of (t‐) an aspirated variant, an unaspirated variant, and a voiced variant. The sociolinguistic distribution of these three variants is described and tentative explanations are proposed for the patterns identified.
