Edward Forbes, Richard Owen and the Red Lions

Abstract

Unfortunately at the time Owen was suffering with a severe sore throat, so much so that his Report on British Fossil Reptiles, Part 1, which was to have been read on Thursday, was postponed to the Saturday (Owen, 1894). Meanwhile at the beginning of that week Forbes, together with a group of young naturalists which included Edwin Lankester (aged 25), adjourned to the nearby Red Lion public house where they dined cheaply on beef washed down with sundry portions of beer. They chose this in contradistinction to the more formal Association dinners where the members, often with their wives, served endless dishes at considerable expense.
