The history of generic distinctions in literary form bears renewed scrutiny alongside the emergence of postcoloniality as an identity. Indeed, the latter presents specific problems for our understanding of the former. By reading several examples of genre critique (including Derrida and Bakhtin) alongside what is held to constitute postcoloniality, I attempt to provide a polemical investigation of what grounds genre, and how the grounds of genre shift historically.
