In recent years, Pier Paolo Pasolini’s Petrolio has become a literary point of reference for a number of New Italian Epic authors who seem to find in this novel a typical example of an unidentified narrative object. This article considers, first, how Petrolio has become exemplary for a style of writing that aims to fully engage with the complexity of reality in terms of content and by means of its literary representation. It then focuses on a specific example, Giuseppe Genna’s Italia De Profundis, to analyse how the author related to Pasolini’s experimentation with genre and came to terms with such a legacy. Finally, the article explores how both authors pursued the practice of narration in their novels and tried to elude the rhetoric of discourse in their representation of reality.
