Railways are a heritage tourism resource which encompasses a range of attractions and experiences. They yield a built heritage of stations and other structures which are often deemed worthy of saving when no longer operational because of their historic significance. Conservation does not preclude adaptive reuse and buildings can be altered to perform very different functions from those originally intended, sometimes inspiring criticism. As well as possessing histories of their own, railways illuminate the historical changes in the places they serve and afford insights into the wider conditions of which they are a product. These issues and processes are discussed in the case study with particular reference to the terminus of the line crossing Singapore and connecting it to Malaysia. Recent events mean the end of the railway in its present form, but the promised conservation of the station creates an opportunity to add to Singapore's heritage tourism assets.
