Overcoming Religious Illiteracy: Expanding the Boundaries of Religious Education

Abstract

After defining religious literacy, the article explores key characteristics of the study of religion based on the differentiation of the devotional expressions of religions and their study, the fact that religions are internally diverse, and that they are situated in cultures. A cultural studies approach to the teaching of religion is described. Implications are drawn for the work of religious educators.
