Alienation profiles are used as a means of unifying a series of cognitive conditions related to motivational and control-relevant dimensions of family size among a sample of Catholic mothers. Through cumulative scaling of powerlessness, meaninglessness, and normlessness, fertility differentials by alienation profiles significantly exceed differentials obtained by the separate alienation measures as well as by combinations of religion and socioeconomic status. An exception to the high alienation-high fertility relationship is noted for social isolation, where the level of isolation is inversely related to the number of children.
