Datini (1335–1410) was at the head of a vast group of companies scattered throughout the Mediterranean basin and as far away as Bruges and London. He was in charge of their general management which he exercised by means of numerous written instructions which have survived. Coeur (1395–1456) was brilliantly successful thanks to a carefully maintained confusion between his own interests and those of the king, but this finished by destroying him. Cotrugli (1416–1469), who came from Dalmatia, was active mainly in Naples. Unlike the two others he was an essentially moderate person. These three are good representatives of a new social class, careful to keep their distance from the nobility and from the church.
