Summary To estimate ego strength in relation to period of separation from the mother, three groups of male adolescents were investigated. Two foster home groups consisted of those who were separated early as compared to those who were separated later in life from their natural mothers. The third group had all been brought up by their natural mothers. Ego strength was determined by ratings from the Rorschach prognostic rating scale. The natural mother group shows significantly greater ego strength as measured by the final prognostic scores when the latter group is compared to each of the foster home groups. No difference was found between the two foster home groups.
