Pigment samples taken from wall paintings from a 2nd century AD Roman Egyptian shrine were analysed and compared to analyses of coloured mineral samples taken from the desert in the surrounding area. The aim was to identify the pigments and to discover if it was possible to identify any unique physical and chemical characteristics of the pigments which could be used to determine their source using polarised light microscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy with electron dispersive spectroscopy and proton induced X-ray emission. The research was unsuccessful in determining the provenance ofthe pigments, however, the pigments were identified revealing the presence of an unusual pigment, jarosite.
