One of the most easily understood examples of natural selection occurs when predators preferentially feed on conspicuous varieties in a prey population and thus confer a selective advantage on cryptic varieties. This effect can be demonstrated by using wild birds as predators, pastry ‘baits’ as prey, and coloured stones as backgrounds. We have carried out five experiments using two variations of this method and the results confirm its potential as an exercise in simulating natural selection.
