It is important to identify and understand the views of criminal justice majors. College students at two Midwestern universities were surveyed concerning their views on crime and punishment. The views of criminal justice students were compared to the views of students majoring in other areas. The results of Chi square tests indicated that there were significant differences in the views of the two groups of students with criminal justice majors tending to be more punitive in their views. In multi‐variate analyses, using ordered ordinal regression, after controlling for gender, race, academic level, age and level of conservatism/liberalism, many of the differences disappeared. It appears that those who tend to hold more punitive views are attracted to the criminal justice major.
