Abstract It is argued that belief attributions are context‐dependent. To interpret the sentential clauses embedded in statements attributing belief, we need a derived context, different from the basic context relative to which the statement as a whole is interpreted. Derived contexts are defined, and the apparatus is used to defend a pragmatic account of de re belief attributions.
