The subject of this article is automated symbolization of area features using cartographic symbol fills. The work strives to improve upon the standard 'wallpaper' fill patterns available inmost GIS. Research focuses, specifically on automation of vegetation symbol placement for Ordnance Survey 1:50 000 scale maps. Algorithms are developed for optimising the diagonal grid and semi-random placement patterns, based on an analysis of the current mapping. The algorithms are tested on a large dataset containing woodland polygons. The initial results are evaluated by Ordnance Survey cartographers, the parameters are fine-tuned and the final output is demonstrated to be cartographically sound.
