Trips involving more than one stop before returning home comprise a quarter to a third of all urban travel. A high degree of similarity exists in the pattern of flow for various trip purposes because of a common dependence on the spatial arrangement of activities. Linkages among activity on a single trip, stemming from a savings in transport inputs, are also related to the areal pattern of activities and most frequently involve clustered business and commercial land uses. Several sections of the Lansing metropolitan area (used in the empirical analysis) have strong local linkages among trip purposes, but the city also has a considerable volume of spatially diffused multiple-purpose trip flows.
