An examination of the Duc de Chartres' album of photographs “Voyage d'Orient 1859 – 60”, now in the collection of the Musee d'Orsay in Paris, can help shed light on an interesting problem of attribution — specifically that of a group of unsigned calotype photographs of Greece found in the album. Unsigned calotypes of Greece of the same type, undoubtedly by the same photographer, are found in the set of albums of the Comte de Paris in the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, in other collections of early photographs of Greece, and are often seen in the international photographic marketplace. These photographs have usually either been unattributed or attributed to James Robertson, a Scottish photographer who took calotype views in Athens in 1854.
