The Amish originated in Europe over 280 years ago. Although they eventually disappeared in their homeland area, they have survived remarkably well in the New World. The spread of Amish settlement in the United States encompasses five distinct periods. In the early periods the Amish followed the frontier, similar to other Americans, but generally without success beyond the northeastern quadrant of the country. Amish numerical growth was slow until the twentieth century. They are presently growing rapidly, and each year new Amish communities are established.
