The effects of parents' marital dissolution and the perceived happiness of their marriage on children's desires to marry and have children were assessed. A stratified random sample of 242 young adults was selected. Results indicated that perceived marital satisfaction in the parental home was a more significant factor in determining the familial aspirations of young adults than was marital dissolution. This was especially the case in assessing at what age respondents desired to get married or start having children. Further, while those from divorced homes did not differ from those from intact homes, those from widowed homes were less likely to aspire to have children.
