This article reports on a study of four non-metropolitan patches in the Social Service Department of the predominantly rural country of Norfolk, England. Against the theoretical framework of ‘community oriented social work’, the study analyses and assesses four working rural patches in various stages of development. The methodology used was field research; data was collected through close observation of the activities of the patchworkers and other helpers in the localities selected. Those activities are assessed against a framework comparing social work tasks based on the ‘case’ and ‘community’ oriented models of service, with participation, optimisation and pragmatism taken as the axis around which community oriented social work revolves. Recommendations for possible replication of the model in other countries are provided.
