This article explores the relationship of Erik Erikson's psychosocial developmental theory and Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs to the needs of older persons for continued spiritual development. Both Erikson and Maslow added the spiritual concept transcendence to their theoretical formulations in their own later years. Tornstam's postulations regarding gereotranscendence, built upon Erikson's eighth stage is also examined.
