A Piagetian approach was used to investigate the cognitive development of children who experience emotional and behavioural difficulties (E.B.D.) The method of critical exploration was adopted specifically in the light of the children's difficulties. Cognitive processes and the nature of the children's reasoning were clarified by the method of exploration used. In particular their thinking was characterised by a high degree of uncertainty. The method was shown to be particularly fruitful for providing insight into the cognitive difficulties experienced by this group of children. The findings thus contribute to our understanding of the special educational needs of such children and have major implications for methods and approaches used in teaching.
