EL OCASO DE LA DEPENDENCIA SALITRERA (1914-1926

Abstract

Our approach studies the impact of WWI on the nitrate industry, from the perspective of the role played by the state and private to preserve its continuity in times of unstable demand.Through the presentation and analysis of proposals on how to organize the industry in a period of crisis, we suggest the survival of an anachronistic model of the dynamics of global markets and the ideological conflicts of the period. This situaction manifested basically in the absence of a formal and permanent institutions that regulate the activity, and insubstantiality in the technical and political debate on the future of the industry. The result of the lack of foresight meant, from our point of analysis, a setback in the process of modernization of the state and increasing consolidation of fiscal dependence of nitrate, even in times of terminal crisis.
