Telephone-administered psychological therapy appears to be a promising alternative to face-to-face therapy. Although it is expected that its efficacy will be established in the near future, progress in understanding its process will likely struggle given how investigations have proceeded with face-to-face therapy. The primary reason appears to be an overemphasis on few experimental designs (and randomized clinical trials in particular) without sufficient attention to science in its entirety. It is hoped that this situation is remedied particularly for research on telephone-administered psychological therapy, as further investigations will likely bring about significant advancement in our understanding of therapy in general, regardless of the administration format.
