ABSTRACT : This article is an attempt to analyse the success and the decline of the project of research on discourse, which developped in French linguistics from the late sixties to the late seventies, in the context of the end of both marxism and structuralism. The type of theoretical relation which was then established between marxism and linguistics in the French tradition of discourse analysis is examined. Its epistemological foundations and institutional strategies, as well as the role it played as marxist politics within humanities are questioned, especially through the critical survey of works by M. Pêcheux and L. Althusser. A possible redefinition of the question of discourse in a post-marxist and post-structuralist perspective is at last suggested.
