Abstract

The population of many villages in the Middle West is increasing, even though these villages have lost most of their central place functions. Proximity to a large city is more influential than population as a factor explaining the increase of the village population. The pattern of village population growth is too complex to be satisfactorily explained by any simple set of statistical variables.
