The author had directed excavations on three washing floor sites, all predominantly of nineteenth century date and all in northern England. He argues that published discussions of ore-dressing have drawn heavily on a limited number of contemporary written sources, and that recording and excavation of sites would aid the understanding of these complex processes. His paper concludes with a discussion of the problems encountered in the excavation of washing floors, together with a survey of their archaeological potential. He suggests that excavation of sites should form part of a research strategy concerned with the broader mining landscape in all regions of Britain.
