This paper reviews the conceptualisation of paternal involvement and its determinants in the transition to fatherhood, as well as the major findings from longitudinal studies, with a view to explicating identity theory as a means of understanding the emergence of a new identity status – becoming a first-time father. It will be argued the theory may be useful in explaining variation in meaning of this new status and the consequences for new fathers’ involvement with their children.
