The Perspective Map Projection of the Earth

Abstract

The perspective projection of the earth onto a tilted plane, if done mathematically, is useful for base maps simulating the coverage of still photographs of the earth from space vehicles, with the camera located anywhere in space and pointed toward any portion of the earth. Graticules may also be plotted for existing space photographs. Several earlier formulas, published or unpublished, are assembled with outlines of simplified independent derivations. Some apparently new formulas are included, such as inverse formulas for grid ding of space photographs. The formulas are given for the ellipsoid with height adjustments, and they may be readily simplified for the sphere.
