Reproduction/Reconstruction of Turkish Folk Music: Choir of voices from homeland called as “Yurttan Sesler” as a national merging project Türk halk müziğinin yeniden üretimi/inşası: Ulusal kaynaştırma projesi olarak “Yurttan Sesler” topluluğu

Abstract

Music is an effective means used in constructing cultural identity. Music of a society not only allows it to position itself differently but also creates an integrating and merging effect as compared with others. So music not only divides people but also merge them. Thus music is a differentiating and joining phenomenon paradoxically. This article discusses how the diversity in folk music in Turkey produced and consumed independently from each other for the first years of the Republic of Turkey has been turned to an integrating and merging factor by being reproduced under the title of “Yurttan Sesler” (Voices from the Homeland) guided by Muzaffer Sarısözen and the reflections of that performance today.
