Rollet Catherine. ? Infant feeding, Fostering and Infant Mortality in France at the end of the 19th century. Administrative records in France provide information for the period 1890- 1910 of the method of feeding of infants fostered in France, and of those who died before their first birthday. This information makes it possible to construct a map of feeding practices in France at that time. North of the Loire, animal milk was mainly used, but in the South of France, human milk was used. These regional differences are due to differences in industrial conditions in different parts of France leading to differing employment opportunities for women, and in the geographical distribution of dairy farming. These practices had important consequences on infant mortality. Before Pasteur, infant mortality was high in the regions of artificial feeding, but a high level was also found in those regions where infants were weaned relatively late.
