The `alternative' media realm, formed as a result of the social and civil rights movements of the 1960s and recommended by some critical media analyses, aims to provide a counterbalance to more mainstream media. Drawing on the work of Herman and Chomsky, and Giddens, this article maps out the parameters of one alternative newspaper organization located in Honolulu, Hawai'i from the perspective of those who work there. Using a political-economic lens, the article focuses on the enabling and constraining conditions of employment at the Honolulu Weekly and, in turn, helps us to understand more fully the dilemma of `alternative' news work, news organizations, their institutional arrangements and dominant societal arrangements.
