This paper deals with the Norwegian home and the way of life. The home is extremely salient in Norwegian culture and it is a place where a great deal of life takes place. The home appears as a cornerstone as well as an adorned castle. A lot of consumption is connected to the home, and the design and furniture suggest that the owner has “taste” and an inner understanding of wholeness and signals economic resources as well as cultural. This article illustrates how the home has become a place of intimacy and individual taste and signals the values of family life. Further there is a tendency away from a room indicating social categories towards a room telling about individual traits. Finally, the tendency is to have a second home and many Norwegians have a cottage to contemplate and relax in leisure time. The style in the cabin is quite different from the home and reinforces the meaning of the cabin as a place where you recover from modern life.
