The present study was designed to investigate two characteristics of spontaneity, its relationship to creativity and to impulsivity. We hypothesized a positive relationship between spontaneity and creativity, consistent with Moreno, 1953 Moreno, J. L. 1953. Who shall survive?, Beacon, NY: Beacon House. [Google Scholar] “canon of spontaneity-creativity.” We also predicted a negative relationship between spontaneity and impulsivity. Participants were graduate and undergraduate students at an independent, urban university in Upper Midwest United States (N = 117) who were administered three inventories measuring spontaneity, impulsivity, and creativity. Results confirmed both predictions. Further, a different pattern of relationships existed between the four subscales measuring impulsivity and spontaneity and the four subscales measuring impulsivity, spontaneity, and creativity. The subscale measuring sensation seeking, however, showed a completely different pattern of relationship to creativity and impulsivity. It correlated positively with both.
