The background of this special issue of the Journal of Pediatric Psychology devoted to child neuropsychology has benefitted from the great expansion of the neurosciences, including neuropsychology, and has become much more autonomous from both psychiatry and internal medicine than was once the case. Child neurology has emerged as an independent subspecialty. The everyday professional contributions of the psychologist, for example, evaluating intellectual level and academic performance of children and helping with the management of their behavior, seem essential to the adequate practice of child neurology. These form the basis for other, more innovative, types of clinical and research collaboration.
