Summary Griffith Taylor's correspondence with Isaiah Bowman and Ellsworth Huntington provided important support during Taylor's difficult years of pioneering for geography teaching and research in Australia. His contacts with these leading scholars were also highly influential factors in his initial appointment to Sydney University and throughout his stormy career at that institution; they were also closely associated with his decision to move to the University of Chicago. Both Americans encouraged Taylor's early research into racial origins and diffusions and helped to promote his controversial analysis of the limits of settlement in Australia. The correspondence includes valuable personal observations on American geography and Bowman's strong criticism of the Australian geographer's supposed infatuation with the broad generalizations of Huntington.
