The correctional strategy of evaluation and management of jail sentences in the Canadian system is based on risk management. The research's goal outlined in this article was to analyse the methods and basis of this strategy, as well as its relevance with the new penology, through semi-directive interviews of decision makers in the federal correctional services in Québec. Therefore, it appears that the actual correctional service is trying to implement a management and evaluation program of inmates that will be rational, coherent, logical and continuous. Its main target is society protection against certain inmates' danger. However, not only is rationalising hard to implement, but this system is trying to reconcile many different perspectives. On the one hand, it is trying to protect society, while aiming at rehabilitating inmates into that same society. On the other hand, new evaluation and management technologies have been instituted paired with treatments, help-related and follow-up programs. In the midst of lots of pressures and different currents, the results of this strategy remains undetermined and difficult to specify.
