This article seeks to engage socialist Chinese counter-espionage film beyond the frame of analysis dictated by state propaganda and film genre. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach that combines textual analysis and contextual research in history, architecture and interior design, the article travels between cinematic and historical spaces such as the homes of spies and socialist workers, the offices of official investigators, the urban as well as social landscape of the 1950s and in the process observes a dynamic incomplete alignment between cinema and history, representation and reality, politics and society.
