Spike Tanner's scientific work, particularly his work with John Swets, Ted Birdsall, and David Green, had an immense impact on the development of theory and method in psychoacoustics. His research has also had a profound influence on experimental psychology, where his work forms one of the most frequently cited foundations of the area known as cognitive or information-processing psychology. Spike's research activities spanned a wide range of basic and applied science; from work in the psychology of hearing and vision, to applied work in education, criminal justice, and in military and space research. A common theme runs throughout: The human is a rational observer, continually testing hypotheses on the basis of environmental inputs, prior experience, and costs and payoffs. The work of his associates and students at Michigan has continued to expand the influence of Spike's ideas. The breadth of this work, and some of the research directions pursued by his students, will be discussed. Finally, some personal recollections of working with Spike will be shared.
