Although prose narrative overshadows poetry in contemporary French Caribbean writing, the prestige of poetry in this context is incontestable. French Caribbean poetry is typically referential. It is saturated with intertextual reference and with reference to location. However, since the poetic function of language involves a high coefficient of relationality, and since both intertextuality in general and the Caribbean experience of space and time are based on exponential relationality, French Caribbean poetry bears a special, epistemological value.
