Abstract

What is not known about tapa far outweighs what is known and most conservation work on tapa is of a pioneering nature. This study gives an account of tapa manufacture and decoration. The conservation literature is surveyed and supplemented by the authors’ experience. Unfolding, flattening, cleaning, de‐acidification, tear repair, consolidation, storage and display are discussed. Washing treatments are discouraged. The need to understand variations in local manufacture and decoration is strongly emphasised.
