Work is a major socializing force in giving form and content to adult life. The prominence of work in the life cycle, and of the values, habits, and personal contacts made at the work place, suggest a compelling relationship between work and adult personality. In a study of mental health professionals (psychoanalysts, psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, psychiatric social workers) there were no significant differences in family or early childhood experiences to account for the differences in initial occupational choice. Similarities in training and in styles of early professional social interaction contributed significantly to the striking current similarities across the 4 groups in ideology, values, interests, and general life-styles.
