African arthropod exhibition, Yebo Gogga, is used as an example to describe the process of developing and running such an exhibition. Yebo Gogga has three aims; to engage and educate the public, particularly children, about arthropods and their context within biology; as an outreach project for Wits University into the Johannesburg community; and to promote general interest in arthropods. The target group is broad, encompassing schools, tertiary educational institutions, and the public of Gauteng Province. Public media and individual invitations are used to publicise the event. Several parties, including professional and amateur zoologists, join forces to pool their respective expertise on the subject of arthropods. Thematic approaches are used to draw together a variety of organisms and displays. The success of the venture has been measured by attendance figures and media coverage as indicators of general interest in the exhibition, and by visitor evaluation responses. As an annual event, Yebo Gogga has cost very little, although many costs are hidden by the nature of the partnership of the organising groups and their different resources. The educational role and the relevance of arthropod exhibitions in general and of Yebo Gogga in particular are discussed.
