A semantic differential technique was used to compare the attitudes of 70 adolescents and 65 young adults toward the aged. The subjects were compared on social object ratings of 20‐30‐year olds, 40‐55‐year olds, 70+ year‐olds, and the self. A 2 X 2 analysis of variance was computed and resulted in several significant main effects and one significant interaction. All three dimensions of the semantic differential showed a significant difference between the social objects. Most significantly, the Instrumental‐Ineffective dimension illustrated that the adolescent population demonstrated a more favorable attitude toward the aged than did the young adults. Although the two populations were only a few years apart in age, their attitudes toward the various age groups were dissimilar.
