The following is a commentary on the most recent ABCDE (Annual Bank Conference on Development Economics) which the author has attended as a speaker. Held in Oslo, Norway from June 24 to 26, 2002, the meeting was the fourth in the European series of ABCDE that the World Bank has sponsored as a distinctively European platform to complement the US and Latin American series for scholarly discussion on development issues. The main theme of this year’s conference was “the Struggle Against Poverty” and the discussion was held on the following five themes, currently on the international agenda: Trade Policy; Development Aid and the Millennium’s Development Goals; States’ Failures; Migration; and the Political Economy of Crisis and Reform. This commentary was primarily meant to let the author share with the readers a personal account of the views presented by some of the participants on some of the development issues that are on the conference agenda. The author recommends that the interested readers visit the conference web site at http://www.worldbank.org/abcde-europe for additional (and unfiltered) information on the contents and scope of this year’s meeting.
