Assessment of the geographical area within Scotland in which the Gaelic language has been spoken in the past has hitherto been largely based upon the evidence of the Census, which from 1881 has enumerated by parish those persons in Scotland able to speak Gaelic. The paper examines three separate sources which detail the extent of the Gaelic language in Scotland from the late seventeenth to the early nineteenth century. Examination of these sources outlines more precisely the Gaelic‐speaking area of Scotland for the pre‐Census period.
