In Malaysia, the highly prestigious International Speech Competition in Malay Language (PABM) has been an annual event since 2007. Dozens of candidates from more than 30 countries compete for the Trophy of the (Deputy) Prime Minister of Malaysia. This article views the competition in its political context and focuses on the rhetorical strategies of two winning speeches in a case study, comparing one by a male Malay and one by a female Russian participant.* *I would like to thank Volker Grabowsky and Amanda Rath for their comments on earlier versions of this article, as well as Amanda Rath's help with the English editing. All remaining errors are of course my sole responsibility.
