In the midst of the controversy concerning the authorship and authenticity of the Vespucci corpus lies German cartographer Martin Waldseemüller's curious use of the place-name Abbatia omniũ Sanctorum (Latin for Abbey of All Saints) on the east coast of Brazil, a location more commonly known as Bay of All Saints. This essay examines the use of the variant "badia" within the context of Vespucci's letters and their transmission, early cartographic representations of the New World, and the commercial lingua franca of the early sixteenth century.
