STREATER, ALICIA L., and CHERTKOFF, JEROME M. Distribution of Rewards in a Triad: A Developmental Test of Equity Theory. CHILD DEVELOPMENT, 1976, 47, 800-805. Previous research on the reward allocation of children has involved only 1 or 2 of 3 paradigms: participant, supervisor, or negotiation, only dyads, and usually only 1 or 2 age groups. The present study compared all 3 paradigms, expanded the dyad to a triad, so reward was distributed among children producing at high, average, and low rates, and used 3 age groups. Children in the 6-7 age group preferred equity, while the 8-9 and 12-13 age groups preferred equality. Equality was prevalent in divisions by low productivity participants, by average productivity participants, and by negotiation. High productivity participants and supervisors favored equity. No sex difference was obtained.
